Trigger Point Injections

Trigger Point Injection (TPI) therapy is a treatment used to relieve the pain and stiffness caused by small tense points in your muscle structure. These are called “trigger points” and are often sensitive to the touch. Trigger points are like small knots in your muscles that keep an area of the body tense and unable to relax. These small knots can be felt under the skin. Trigger points may also cause pain in the nerves surrounding the affected area and even cause referred pain, or pain that you can feel in other parts of your body.

trigger point injectionsIn some cases, the small knots can form in fascia tissue which can lead to myofascial pain. Myofascial trigger points have the ability to cause pain and dysfunction and often correlates with chronic musculoskeletal pain disorders. This prolonged stress can cause injury and damage. Because of the tension, these areas are also slow to heal.

Trigger point injection therapy targets these tense knots and relaxes them with a small injection. During the TPI procedure, a specialist will insert a small needle into the trigger point. The injection may include a corticosteroid but also includes a local anesthetic or saline. Injections can take just a few minutes and most patients report immediate relief. Several sites on the body can be injected per visit. You have a severe allergy to medications, a dry needle technique involving no medications can be used.

When is it appropriate to you TPI? Treatments can positively affect:
